Members of CUPE 2626 can run for various elected positions. These positions allow members to become closely involved in union business and are usually paid (except for Trustees). Each position is subject to specific linguistic requirements, which you can find below. Executive positions are usually filled at the Annual General Assembly (AGA) in winter, and non-executive positions are usually filled at the Regular General Assembly (RGA) in the fall. Linguistic Requirements

The linguistic requirements associated with each elected position within CUPE 2626 are based on the following Degrees of Functionality:

Degree A: Written and oral comprehension, written and oral expression.
Degree B: Written and oral comprehension, oral expression.
Degree C: Written and oral comprehension.
Degree D: Written comprehension.

EXECUTIVE POSITIONS

Elections for the following elected executive positions usually take place at the AGA in the Winter Semester. By elections can happen at other times, depending on vacancies.

President

  • Official spokesperson for CUPE 2626.
  • Enforces the CUPE Constitution and these bylaws.
  • Ensures the proper functioning of the Union.
  • Primary contact between CUPE 2626 and CUPE National.
  • Member of the Grievance Committee.
  • Supervises employees on behalf of the EB.
  • Provides a monthly report to the EB.
  • Honorarium: Approx. $13,850 (for full, 1-year mandate).
  • Language Requirements: This position requires a minimum Degree of Functionality A in one of the two official languages and a Degree of Functionality B in the second official language.

Vice-President

  • Performs all duties of the President if the President is absent or unable to perform their duties.
  • Responsible for internal communications with members.
  • Responsible for the GC.
  • Provides a monthly report to the EB.
  • Honorarium: Approx. $12,925 (for full, 1-year mandate).
  • Language Requirements: This position requires a minimum Degree of Functionality A in one of the two official languages and a Degree of Functionality B in the second official language.

Treasurer

  • In charge of finances, statements, financial transactions, and other financial matters.
  • Chair of the Finance Committee.
  • First person in charge of the Defense Fund.
  • Responsible for the payment of bills.
  • Provides financial reports and statements.
  • Ensures that the finances of CUPE 2626 are kept in accordance with recognized accounting practices.
  • Provides a monthly report to the EB.
  • Honorarium: Approx. $11,075 (for full, 1-year mandate).
  • Language Requirements: This position requires a minimum Degree of Functionality A in French and a Degree of Functionality B in English.

Chief Steward Francophone (CS-F)

  • Shares CS responsibilities with the CS Anglophone.
  • Resource person for the Stewards – coordinates the training and the activities of the Stewards.
  • Ensures the organisation of the Stewards’ Council.
  • Main contact between the SC and the EB.
  • Member of the Grievance Committee.
  • Provides a monthly report to the EB.
  • Honorarium: Approx. $11,075 (for full, 1-year mandate).
  • Language Requirements: This position requires a minimum Degree of Functionality A in French and a Degree of Functionality D in English.

Chief Steward Anglophone (CS-A)

  • Shares CS responsibilities with the CS Francophone.
  • Resource person for the Stewards – coordinates the training and the activities of the Stewards.
  • Ensures the organisation of the Stewards’ Council.
  • Main contact between the SC and the EB.
  • Member of the Grievance Committee.
  • Provides a monthly report to the EB.
  • Honorarium: Approx. $11,075 (for full, 1-year mandate).
  • Language Requirements: This position requires a minimum Degree of Functionality A in English and a Degree of Functionality D in French.

Equity and Education Officer

  • Report to the EB regarding conditions which impede the participation of particular constituencies and to facilitate the participation of those particular constituencies.
  • Coordinates the training of the Board members, the Stewards and the regular members.
  • Provides a monthly report to the EB.
  • Honorarium: Approx. $7,385 (for full, 1-year mandate).
  • Language Requirements: This position requires a minimum Degree of Functionality A in one of the two official languages and a Degree of Functionality D in the second official language.

Health and Safety Officer

  • In charge of the Occupational Health and Safety Committee (OHSC) 2626.
  • Acts as a liaison with the membership and the University on health and safety matters.
  • Responsible for overseeing the environmental and sustainability initiatives of the CUPE 2626.
  • Provides a monthly report to the EB.
  • Honorarium: Approx. $4,150 (for full, 1-year mandate).
  • Language Requirements: This position requires a minimum Degree of Functionality A in one of the two official languages and a Degree of Functionality D in the second official language.

Recording Secretary

  • In charge of recording the minutes for the various meetings of CUPE 2626.
  • Records all alterations to the bylaws.
  • Maintains a policy log.
  • Prepares the agenda, notices, minutes, etc.
  • Presides over meetings in the absence of the President of Assembly.
  • Honorarium: Approx. $5,500 (for full, 1-year mandate).
  • Language Requirements: This position requires a minimum Degree of Functionality A in one of the two official languages and a Degree of Functionality D in the second official language.

Liaison Officer

  • Responsible for relations with organisations on campus (e.g. GSAÉD, SFUO, APTPUO, etc.)
  • This role includes helping with outgoing communications (announcements, newsletters, videos, etc.).
  • Chairs the Mobilisation Committee.
  • Provides a monthly report to the EB.
  • Honorarium: Approx. $7,200 (for full, 1-year mandate).
  • Language Requirements: This position requires a minimum Degree of Functionality A in one of the two official languages and a Degree of Functionality D in the second official language.

NON-EXECUTIVE POSITIONS

Elections for the following elected non-executive positions usually take place at the RGA in the Fall Semester. By-elections can happen at other times, depending on vacancies.

President of Assembly

•  Presides over the meetings of the EB and the SC, as well as the GAs.
•  Ensures that the rules and procedures are respected and the rights of the members, present or absent, are not infringed upon.
•  Must apply Bourinot’s Rules of Order, the CUPE 2626 Bylaws and the CUPE Constitution.
•  Honorarium: Approx. $4,150 (for full, 1-year mandate).
•  Language Requirements: This position requires a minimum Degree of Functionality A in one of the two official languages and a Degree of Functionality C in the second official language.

Member in Good Standing

•  Helps other members of the Grievance Committee to fulfill their duties.
•  Helps the Chief Stewards deal with grievances, does the research and finds the documentation relevant to handling the grievances.
•  Honorarium: Approx. $1,850 (for full, 1-year mandate).
•  Language Requirements: This position requires a minimum Degree of Functionality A in one of the two official languages and a Degree of Functionality B in the second official language.

Trustee (1-3 positions)

•  Exercises general supervision over the property of the Local.
•  Examines the books and records of the Treasurer.
•  Ensures that the local complies with the provisions of the CUPE National Constitution.
•  Language Requirements: This position requires a minimum Degree of Functionality A in one of the two official languages and a Degree of Functionality D in the second official language.
•  Please note that this is not a paid position.

BARGAINING POSITIONS

In bargaining years, the membership elects a chairperson and up to four other members as part of the Bargaining Committee (BC).

Chair of the Bargaining Committee

  • Acts as the first person in charge of the committee as well as its official spokesperson.
  • Ensures that the mandate of the BC is respected.
  • Fulfills the role of Chief Negotiator in the absence of the CUPE National Representative.
  • Presents reports on collective bargaining to the EB.
  • Distributes the necessary documentation to members of the BC.
  • Honorarium: Honoraria to be given to the people holding positions on the BC will be determined based on the duration of the negotiations and the number of members on the BC. The total amount given to the entire BC will not normally be inferior to the value of two and a half full TA appointments (approx. $13,000).
  • Language Requirements: This position requires a minimum Degree of Functionality A in one of the two official languages and a Degree of Functionality B in the second official language.

Members of the Bargaining Committee

  • Members of the BC, in addition to the Chair and the CUPE Representative, work on bargaining matters in accordance with the mandate they receive from the GA.
  • Honorarium: Honoraria to be given to the people holding positions on the BC will be determined based on the duration of the negotiations and the number of members on the BC. The total amount given to the entire BC will not normally be inferior to the value of two and a half TA appointments (approx. $13,000).
  • Language Requirements: This position requires a minimum Degree of Functionality A in one of the two official languages and a Degree of Functionality C in the second official language.
